HISTORY OF SHARE INTERNATIONAL, INC

Share International, Inc. (SI) grew out of the vision and inspiration of Sammy and Mary Murimi, Kenyan nationals. On January 18, 1989, while attending Trinity Evangelical Divinity school in Illinois, the verse “share the gospel … (and) our lives” in I Thessalonians 2:8 made a strong impression on Sammy. It was at that moment that Share International, Inc. (SI) was born.

The United States and Kenya Boards of Directors were formed in 1992 & 1993 respectively. In 1996, Sammy began to serve under SI on a full-time basis. In the same year, SI arranged its first Short-Term Outreach and Relief Mission (STORM) trip. Since 1997, SI has been leading outreach groups of Africans and non-Africans on STORM trips among the Turkana and the refugee people groups that live in the northwestern desert region of Kenya. SI has been planting at least one church each year in Turkanaland. As of August 2010 SI had actively facilitated planting of 88 churches and supporting 10 indigenous pastors, 21 missionaries, and 10 Adult Literacy teachers in Turkanaland.

In 2003, the Children of the Kingdom (COK) ministry started by Emily Huff and Pastor Samwel Kaaleng in 1995 to provide education to Turkana children merged with SI. As of August 2010, over 400 children had gone through the COK sponsorship program, with over 50 having graduated from high school and college/university.

In 2005, SI started ministering to the Dalit people-group of India in the Andhra Pradesh Province. As of August 2010 a total of 35 Indian women had graduated from SI’s one-year sewing training program.
